About Our College

Tumsar is one of the oldest towns located on the north-eastern edge of Maharashtra state adjoining Madhya Pradesh. Our college is one of the higher education institutions run by one among the Gondia Education Society, the biggest and well reputed education societies under Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur.

The Vidarbha region in Maharashtra is culturally and economically, and to some extent, socially backward in nature. For many years this region was known as Zadi Patti. Shri- Manoharbhai Patel, who believed in the philosophy of never tireless work and had a clear vision for the future established the Gondia Education Society, Gondia way back in the year 1958. He like Rishi Bhagirath, brought the Ganga of knowledge to the educationally deprived region, and redeemed their lives. Today, the Society and the institution are playing a very prominent role in the field of higher education. The Society, which had hardly a few hundreds of students has now grown into a mammoth banyan tree spreading its aerial roots to the districts of Gondia, Bhandara and Nagpur with its 18 plus institutions of higher education, and a number of high schools and Jr. Colleges. Even the student capacity also rapidly grew to over 25 thousand heads. To promote the cause of education further the Society celebrates the birth anniversary of Late Shri Manoharbhai Patel on 9th February every year, and presents gold medals to the outstanding students studying in different classes. Presently, the Society also runs a college of Pharmacy, a B. Ed. College, a Military school, and a couple of Engineering colleges, one of which is the part of the Manoharbhai Patel Knowledge City with an educational complex offering education in different branches located on National Highway No. 6 near Bhandara.

S. N. Mor Arts, Commerce and Smt. G. D. Saraf Science College, Tumsar was established in 1965. Shri Yadao Mukundrao Pathak, a well-known Marathi poet was the founder principal of the college. Responding to the call of Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi, many schools were opened across the country. Initially, the college began functioning in the building of one of such schools - Lokmanya Tilak Rashtriya Vidyalaya, Tumsar, which is also known to be the result of the inspiration drawn from Late Shri Manoharbhai Patel. The local community felt the need of expansion of the institution, and Seth Durgaprasad Saraf trust came forward to extend the financial assistance to add Science stream, and the new Science stream in the memory of Smt. Godawaridevi Saraf, the beloved wife of Seth Durgaprasadji Saraf, the doyen of Manganese Industry, the Managing Director of Facor, a leading Manganese processing industry of the nation.

The college, which had a humble starting in two small rooms in the year 1965 has now grown into gigantic shape with a huge building, spacious classrooms. modern laboratories, well-furnished library with over 47 thousand books on its stacks, sports complex and playground with modern equipment’s, computer lab, automated office, well-qualified faculties, independent toilets for boys and girls, comfortable staff rooms, canteen, clean and pure drinking water, etc. The alumni of the college are at the foremost position in various fields in India and abroad. The college is playing a vital role in the all round development of the youth through their educational development in this socially, economically and educationally backward area.

The town has got the history of participation in freedom struggle, and the college is carrying further the holy duty of instilling sanskars among the youth. On the eve of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Independence Day, the college played significant role in organizing The Poster Exhibition on Gandhiji's life, and the mashal rallies.

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, visited this place on 2th February, 1927. The meeting was held in Ganj Bazar with (which had) 52 doors standing as witness of historical grandeur and the glory of the town. A donation of Rs. 1800/- was presented by the citizens of Tumsar to Mahatma Gandhi for the national cause. The Jungle Satyagraha was one of the known activities of the struggle, and the town was also in the forefront in Quit India Movement of 1942. As many as six citizens of the town laid their lives on the black day of firing on 14th August, 1942. The obelisk standing at the centre is a live evidence of their patriotism and martyrdom.

Right from the old days, the town has enjoyed a high reputation as the Rice Bowl of Maharashtra and the adjoining states Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradsh. The popular belief in the area is that even the scent of the locally produced Channoor rice was savoured and relished by the courtiers in the court of the emperor Akbar in Delhi. The Tumsar market witnesses the yearly turnover of over crores of Rupees, and is one of the largest in the Vidarbha region. Large mines of high quality Manganese are found at the outskirts of the town.

The Gawali rulers ruled over this town, as the leaves of history books reveal. The Haihas (Rajputas) ruled over the region since 7th A. D., and the capital of their kingdom was Nagardhan, at the distance of merely 40 kms from the town, as the stone inscriptions discovered during the excavation at Ratanpur in Bilaspur district in Chhatisgarh in 1184 A. D. elucidate. Following the decline of Rajputas, the Gonds established their supremacy over the region between 12th and 16th century A.D.. Many parts of this region were under the control of Bukt Buland Shaha, the king of Devgarh. The citadel of Ambagarh was built during Bukt Buland Shah Regime. This is the place in the Satpuda Range near Tumsar. After him, the rule of this region was transferred to Chand Sultan, Raghuji Bhosale, Appasaheb Bhosale and finally, to the British. This area witness rapid progress during the 17th century. Ramtek, a pilgrimage centre, is situated about 55 Kms. from here

The town popularly known as the Kuber Nagari has one of the oldest municipalities since 1857. Now with the efforts of the Society and the college, it is known as 'the Knowledge and Culture Nagari'. Gondia- the Head Quarter of the Gondia Education Society is at 65 Kms. distance to the east. This place is on the national map because of the former president and all time inspiration Shri Praful Patel, Member, Rajya Sabha.

Shri. Praful Patel, the patron of the Gondia Education Society is the able son of Late. Shri Manoharbhai Patel contributed, and is still contributing a lot in making this region educationally rich. Bestowing heap of praises on Shri Manoharbhai Patel for his emulative services for society, Rashtrasant Shri Tukdoji Maharaj recited:

The former president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The former Chief Minister and the architect of Maharashtra, Shri Yashwantrao Chavan, Karmaveer Shri. Dadasaheb Kannamwar, the former Finance Minister Shri Ashokji Mehta, Shri. Ravishankar Shukla, etc. paid visits to the Society. Shri. Praful Patel, Member, Rajya Sabha is successfully carrying forward the exemplary works of his beloved father and the dedicated people like him with equal zeal, belief, and dedicative attitude. He nourishes the dream of making each college of the world standard. His better-half Shrimati Varsha Patel is the president of the Society and managing the affairs of the Society with equal enthusiasm and aptness. The duo is playing a significant role in the field of culture and sports through Manoharbhai Patel Academy in both Bhandara and Gondia districts. They took up a very important task of women empowerment through Bachat Gat She works with the sole vision - the rural students should get the same education as their metropolitan counterparts, and her whole life and personality are great support to rely on.

The institution got the guidance and opportunity to welcome well-known guests- the former President Shri Shankardayalji Sharma, Smt. Pratibhatai Patil, the President of India, Shri Sharad Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture, Shri Farukh Abdulha, Shri Kapil Sibbal, Union Minister for Human Resource and Development during variety of programmes of the Gondia Education Society. The present Secretary of the Society, Shri Rajendraji Jain persistently takes care of the development of the institution.

As it is underlined by Shri. Kapil Sibal, Former Minister of Human Resource and Development, the education institution should shoulder the responsibility of creating the competent future citizens with good character, who will take society and the nation towards prosperity. The Society and the institution work with the objective of fulfilling these goals. The nation is marching towards becoming the superpower, and everyone works with the aim of enabling youth ever ready to face the new challenges. We need the youth with good character and able hands to manage and run the system competently. The Society and the institution are working to create such competent youth by offering them moral strength through their variety of programmes and activities holding the aim of development through thoughts and deeds.
